Case Study 1. Relax
Thousands of heart patients have benefitted from the use of the classic relaxation techniques provided by an audio tape or CD. But for people who use BSL the very first line causes an obvious problem - Close your eyes and relax and imagine you are in... Not much use to a visually communicating person.

So the challenge to Access Communication was, could we produce the same relaxing journey that is used audibly, but in an entirely visual programme designed to work in conjunction with a beautiful calming BSL performance. Producing the appropriate imagery create the story that would assist the user to relax needed research but was relatively easy, but timing them up with a gentle and soothing BSL performance from Ian K Townsley took skill and sensitivity.

The resulting BSL video production has given the NHS a useful and powerful tool to extend the benefits of relaxation techniques to those patients who are Deaf in a way that was never possible before.

Case Study 2. Prostate Cancer
When the family of a Deaf person who died of prostate cancer gifted funds to the Prostate Cancer Charity, it gave them an opportunity to use BSL video production to get their important message across to the Deaf Community. Well know Deaf TV presenter Clarke Denmark who had personal experience of the illness was the perfect person to front this highly effective public information piece in conjunction with medical specialists and diagrams.

Access Communication worked closely with the charity to ensure the message was communicated in both a sensitive and effective manner. By combining precise BSL explanations with clear subtitles and voice-overr the programme provides maximum access to this life-saving subject for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences and their hearing carers or partners.

Case Study 3. Voicing the needs of the Deaf.
When Leeds City Council needed to directly canvass the opinions of the elderly Deaf community regarding their future housing and care needs, Access Communication was able to provide the video bridge between the Deaf and the hearing audience.

Comprehensively interviewing a wide spectrum of older Deaf people and subsequently combining their signed opinions carefully and accurately with spoken voice-overs produced a very engaging and highly impactful programme. To achieve this hearing access a group of dedicated retired volunteers who read for the blind were recruited to provide the appropriate voices for the translations, to great effect.

Case Study 4. Websites
Today the internet has become one of the most powerful and accessible medium for communicating quickly to huge audiences. The Deaf community require access to be given to them also and many organisations are rising to this challenge and producing video modules in BSL which run at the click of a mouse.

Access Communications has assisted many such organisations to produce high quality but cost effective material for inclusion on websites. The key here is to create clean, efficient modules at a price that allows business and public organisations to achieve clear communication at a price that represents maximum value.
